Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

When a gynecologic condition requires treatment beyond medication, surgery may be the most effective way to relieve symptoms and restore your quality of life. At Capital Women’s Care in Howard County, Maryland, our physicians are committed to using minimally invasive surgical techniques whenever appropriate, helping you achieve excellent outcomes with less discomfort and a faster recovery.

Our team includes a minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS) specialist, a surgeon with advanced training in complex laparoscopic, hysteroscopic, and robotic-assisted procedures using the da Vinci surgical system. This specialized expertise allows us to provide highly precise, state-of-the-art surgical care tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

We understand that considering surgery can feel overwhelming or even intimidating. Our care team is here to support you at every step—answering your questions, explaining your options clearly, and making sure you feel comfortable, informed, and cared for throughout your experience.

Why Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery uses small incisions and specialized instruments to diagnose and treat a wide range of gynecologic conditions. Many procedures can be performed using laparoscopic, hysteroscopic, or robotic-assisted techniques, and some may even be completed in an advanced office-based surgical setting. Robotic-assisted surgery, such as with the da Vinci system, allows your surgeon enhanced precision, improved visualization, and greater control during complex procedures—while still maintaining the benefits of minimally invasive techniques.

These approaches allow for precise treatment while minimizing disruption to the body and surrounding tissues.

Common benign (non-cancerous) conditions treated with surgery include:

Unlike traditional open surgery, which requires a larger abdominal incision, minimally invasive techniques use much smaller incisions—or sometimes no external incisions at all.

Minimally Invasive Procedures We Offer

Our specially trained gynecologic team offers a range of advanced procedures, including:

Laparoscopic or Robotic-assisted Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy involves removal of the uterus, and in some cases, the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Using laparoscopic or da Vinci robotic-assisted techniques, the procedure is performed through several small abdominal incisions, often resulting in less pain, minimal scarring, and a quicker recovery. In certain situations, the uterus may also be removed vaginally.

Laparoscopic or Robotic-assisted Myomectomy

A myomectomy removes fibroids (uterine growths) while preserving the uterus. This option may be appropriate for individuals who wish to maintain fertility or avoid hysterectomy.

Endometrial Ablation

This procedure destroys the lining of the uterus to reduce or stop heavy menstrual bleeding. It can be effective for symptom relief but is not intended for individuals who wish to become pregnant in the future.

Ovarian Cystectomy

An ovarian cystectomy removes a cyst from the ovary while preserving as much healthy ovarian tissue as possible.

Hysteroscopy (Including Polypectomy or Myomectomy)

Hysteroscopy is a procedure in which a thin, camera-like instrument (hysteroscope) is inserted through the vagina and cervix to view the inside of the uterus. It can be used to both diagnose and treat conditions such as:

Laparoscopic Salpingectomy (Sterilization)

This procedure removes both fallopian tubes and is considered a permanent form of birth control. It is not reversible and should only be considered when you are certain you do not desire future pregnancy.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery
