Is an IUD Painful and Other FAQs

With its long-term, highly effective contraception, an intrauterine device (IUD) stands out as a popular birth control choice for many. However, before committing to treatment, you may have a number of questions, such as: What is an IUD? Is an IUD painful? Can an IUD fall out?

Read on as we answer these and other IUD frequently asked questions so you can make a well-informed decision.

What Is an IUD?

An IUD, or intrauterine device, is a small T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy.

There are two types of IUDs - hormonal and copper. Both work by changing the environment in the uterus to make it difficult for sperm to reach and fertilize an egg.

The IUD is one of the most effective forms of birth control, with a failure rate of less than 1%.

Is an IUD Painful?

Before opting for this device, many patients want to know: Is an IUD painful?

The degree of pain during IUD insertion varies among individuals.

For some, it's a mild discomfort similar to cramps, which usually subsides quickly. Others may experience stronger sensations that last for a short period.

As such, discussing insertion techniques and expectations with your healthcare provider can help alleviate concerns.

What’s more, breathing exercises or taking over-the-counter pain medication as recommended before the procedure may also reduce discomfort.

Can the IUD Fall Out?

It is possible for an IUD to be expelled from the uterus. However, this is an extremely rare occurrence affecting about 3-5% of IUD users.

In fact, some people might not notice when this happens. That’s why it’s crucial to regularly check for the IUD strings by feeling the cervix. If the strings seem longer or you cannot feel them, consult your healthcare provider to determine if the IUD has been expelled and for advice on next steps.

Will My Partner Feel the IUD During Sex?

Typically, neither you nor your partner will feel the IUD during sex or daily activities. It is placed inside the uterus, well out of the way.

That said, if you or your partner do feel discomfort or poking from the IUD, it may be displaced or expelled. In this case, check with your doctor for an evaluation.
