Dr. Acholonu's 4 Tips For Your First Mammogram
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. When it comes to breast cancer, early detection is crucial. If breast cancer is discovered in its earliest stages, the probability of successful treatment and recovery is very high.
If you are getting ready for your first mammogram, it can be a little nerve-racking. Dr. Urenna Acholonu offers four tips to make the process smooth and put your mind at ease.
Schedule Around Your Period
Timing is key when it comes to your mammogram. If you haven’t gone through menopause yet, you should try to schedule your mammogram a week or two after your period. “Breasts are most tender prior to your menstrual cycle,” says Dr. Acholonu, “So for maximum comfort, schedule your mammogram for the week or two after your period.”
Know What to Wear
“You will be standing for your mammogram, so comfortable footwear is key,” says Dr. Acholonu. You may be asked to lean forward or backward for best positioning, avoid wearing heels to maintain balance. You might be asked to remove your jewelry so it doesn't interfere with the machine.
Pain Medication Is Okay
“There is some discomfort with mammograms,” says Dr. Acholonu. “So some pain medication like Tylenol or Ibuprofen is okay”. Try to take the medication about an hour before the mammogram. Check with your provider prior to taking any new medications.
Communication is Key
A mammogram might seem intimidating so it is important to communicate with your mammogram technician. “Don’t be afraid to tell the technician about your concerns of discomfort,” says Dr. Acholonu. “Proper communication can make the process smoother and more ‘comfortable’.
