One of life’s greatest joys is getting to call yourself a mom. This month we celebrate Mother’s Day, and we would like to thank all of the new and experienced mothers alike for all that they do. While it is the most rewarding, it is also one of the toughest full-time jobs out there. This month is also Mental Health Awareness Month, so we’d like to shed some light on mental health for mothers.
Dealing with postpartum stress and anxiety
Whether it is your first child or not, 70%-80% of women will experience some unsettling feelings after having a child. One in seven women will experience diagnosed postpartum depression. It’s important to realize that you are not alone and you are encouraged to talk about what you are feeling.
Unsettling feelings subside for many women over time, but don’t wait to seek professional help.
Make time for yourself
It is important to acknowledge and be honest about the mental health challenges that many mothers experience. Caring for children 24/7, acting as teachers and playmates all while working from home, combined with economic challenges is a lot for one person to think about. Try your best to set aside time for yourself to do something that you enjoy. Schedule it as part of your routine.
Acknowledge that you are human and performing a tough job. If you are not feeling yourself, don’t wait to seek professional guidance.
